America’s Businesses:  The Power to Transform
___

This month marks the 18th anniversary of a landmark event in our nation’s history—the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Since this law was signed by President George H. W. Bush in 1990, communities and workplaces across the nation have become more inclusive and welcoming for America’s nearly 40 million people with disabilities.

When it comes to doing business, being inclusive of people with disabilities—in recruitment, retention, promotion, and in providing an accessible environment—actually offers companies a competitive edge. People with disabilities are qualified, dedicated problem solvers with a proven ability to adapt—highly coveted attributes in today’s rapidly changing workplace.

To learn more about the disability dividend, read Strategic Connections: Recruiting Candidates with Disabilities, one of several publications available from the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP). For more information about the ADA and job accommodations for people with disabilities, contact ODEP’s Job Accommodation Network (JAN).
