Statement of U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao On
the Death of His Holiness Pope John Paul II
WASHINGTON-U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao released the
following statement on the death of His Holiness Pope John Paul II:
"We are all saddened by the passing of his Holiness Pope John Paul II.
His life was a beacon of hope that inspired workers in his native Poland to
stand up against tyranny and helped bring down the Iron Curtain and free
Eastern Europe. As former Director of the Peace Corps, I personally witnessed
how beloved he is among workers of all faiths. He is one of the seminal figures
of the 20th century, and he leaves behind a legacy of love, hope and tolerance
that is an example for us all."
