Welcome to the Women's Bureau, Region IX Web page. The headquarters for
the Regional Office is in San Francisco, California. The Regional office
provides services to women living in the four States of Arizona, California,
Hawaii, Nevada and territory of Guam. This is the most diverse region in the
United States in terms of climate, geographical extremes, and racial and
cultural diversity.
Sunny Arizona's economy reflects a sharp contrast between its
metropolitan and non-metropolitan areas. Phoenix and Tucson have experienced
strong employment growth and are important as regional centers for finance and
commerce. The thirteen non-metro counties have suffered slumps in agriculture
and copper mining. California is the most populous State in the union and third
in land area. The female-labor force has spawned many active women's
organizations. Hawaii's economy continues to evolve from a predominantly rural
plantation society to a highly urbanized and service based economy due to the
rise in tourism and the decline of the sugar and pineapple industries. Low
wages in the tourism industries and the cost of living have forced more women
into the labor market, predominantly into lower wage segments of the labor
force. Las Vegas, the fastest growing community in the country, boosts Nevada's
economy. The State's two metropolitan centers are Las Vegas and Reno. The
United States' Pacific Island territories consist of six major island
jurisdictions, which stretch over an area comparable in size to the contiguous
United States mainland. They are American Samoa, Guam, and the Commonwealth of
the Northern Marianas Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic
of Palau, and the Republic of the Marshall Islands. Guam, American Samoa, and the Northern Marianas have territorial
status similar to that of the Virgin Island and Puerto Rico. The other three
have negotiated independent and free association relationships with the United
States.
Please take the opportunity to explore the Web page. As you click on each
State, you will find more specific statistical data on women.
We hope you will find this information helpful and visit often. For
further information, please telephone the office.
