Our Story

typewriterOur story began like many do - in the midst of competing priorities, federal budget cutbacks, legacy government technology, and the gap between public and private sector technology innovation. In FY17, the Department of Labor's (DOL) OCIO began a journey to modernize and transform mission technology performance at DOL.

We envisioned: DOL and OCIO leadership came together to understand where we were and where we wanted to be. We put things into perspective - we shared the DOL mission, enabled through IT - and committed to solve the most critical technology challenges of the Department's mission and business. We created a new vision and mission, defined our values, and through transparency and collaboration shaped strategic IT goals.

We planned: OCIO division directors recognized the value of IT - processing millions of emails monthly, and daily IT support for 386 offices across the country. We came to terms with the current state of the DOL enterprise IT infrastructure and what we needed to do to make it right. We refocused our IT strategy.

We grew: Then we grew in responsibilities, services and numbers. We now serve 27 agencies and 18,000 DOL staff and contractors conducting agency business and fulfilling agency missions. We completed the business of upgrading and integrating infrastructures. We increased our network availability. We optimized contracts. We grew to 700 staff and contractors.

Today, when people come to know the Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO), they recognize a distinct culture of innovation, collaboration and customer service. OCIO staff and contractors collaborate to modernize IT solutions and participate in advancing the Department of Labor's mission. We provide enterprise-wide services to the Department in support of American citizens, wage earners, job seekers and retirees. We are DOL OCIO - that's our story.
